First Day of High School Ends in Tragedy

What was meant to be a day of excitement and new beginnings for 13-year-old Bokamoso Mokhobo turned into unimaginable heartbreak. Bokamoso was on her way to her very first day of high school when the minibus taxi transporting her and other learners collided with an oncoming truck in a devastating accident.

Tragically, Bokamoso passed away before she could reach her school. The incident has left her family, classmates, and the community reeling from shock and grief. Authorities have launched an investigation into the crash, while calls for improved scholar transport safety have intensified.

This heartbreaking tragedy serves as a grim reminder of the risks learners face on the roads and the urgent need for stricter road safety measures to protect children on their way to school.

Thirteen Learners Killed in Vanderbijlpark Crash

Bokamoso was among 13 learners who lost their lives in the crash. The pupils attended various schools across the Vaal region, including Vaal High School, Vaal Primary School, Suncrest High School, El-Shaddai Christian School, Hoërskool Vanderbijlpark, and Oliver Lodge Primary School. Four other children who were travelling in the same scholar transport vehicle survived and are currently receiving medical treatment in hospital.

Crash Reportedly Occurred During Overtaking Attempt

According to preliminary information, the minibus taxi collided with a truck while attempting to overtake other vehicles on the road. The force of the impact was severe, leading to the deaths of multiple learners and leaving the community devastated as details of the crash emerged.
