The Malawi Government minister for information, Gospel Kazako, has confirmed that they have received the formal letter relating to the extradition of self-proclaimed Prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife Mary from South African authorities. It’s Over For BUSHIRI As Malawi Confirms Extradition Papers From SA
Bushiri and his wife Mary controversially skipped South African borders last month after they were granted bail by the Pretoria Magistrates court for charges relating to fraud and money laundering. The couple is accused of defrauding its congregants to the tune of a whopping R102-million through a forex pyramid scheme.
Kazako confirmed the receival of the formal request from the SA government.
“We have received the formal request and the Attorney general will look at it, from there a decision will be made,” he said.
“At the moment it is difficult to say anything other than we have recieved a formal request,” he added.
Considered fugitives from justice, the couple went back to their native Malawi through questionable ways, with reports then alleging that they could have been smuggled out of the country in Malawi President Lazarus Chakwera’s jet. However, Chakwera who was in South Africa on a working visit denied such allegations with Union Buildings also debunking that speculation.
Meanwhile, following weeks since a Warrant of Arrest for the Bushiris was issued by the Hawks, the Minister of Justice & Correctional Services, Ronald Lamola has followed up on his promise of lodging extradition papers as they attempt to bring back the prophet to answer to his crimes.
