Suspected drug kingpin Yaganathan “Teddy Mafia” was shot dead in a seemingly botched robbery at his Shallcross home on Monday afternoon.
Two men were also attacked and beheaded. Their bodies were burned.
While details are sketchy at this point, a local community activist said Pillay was shot and taken to Chatsmed Hospital.
“We don’t know who did this,” the activist said.
Videos and graphic images of the scene were shared on various social media platforms. In one of the videos, two bodies are seen lying on the road with severed heads near the bodies. In another video, a fire has been started and debris is seen covering the bodies.
KZN SAPS spokesman Brigadier Jay Naicker said that around 2 p.m. the owner of the property known as Teddy Mafia informed his daughter that he was expecting visitors.
“When the suspects arrived at their home, the girl went to the back of their property when she heard gunshots. The girl then established that her father had been shot. The community apprehended the two suspects and subsequently set them on fire, beheading them both, ”he said.’

Naicker said when police arrived at the scene, the community opened fire on them.
The police called the public order police unit, which dispersed the crowd without causing injury.
“Property owner Teddy Mafia died of his injuries at a local hospital. Police did not seize any firearms at the scene. At this point, it is not known whether the suspects were on foot or in a vehicle. Police will investigate three murder cases, ”Naicker said.
Metro police spokesperson SNR Superintendent Parboo Sewpersad said the situation was volatile and urged people to avoid the area.
