Zama zamas snack on ‘human flesh’! STILFONTEIN’S illegal miners face a grim reality.

The zama zamas have resorted into cannibalism as bodies allegedly pile up underground.

According to letters from the zama zamas, the situation has become dire.

A letter dated 25 December 2024 reveals that they’ve started eating human flesh due to starvation, as many perish underground, and bodies are irretrievable.

“Parents, life is hard here underground. People are dying, some trying to escape through Shaft 10 but keep falling. We can’t retrieve their bodies; it’s very tough.

“It further describes the challenges of Shaft 10, where miners are forced to climb, often falling to their deaths, leaving the survivors unable to find or retrieve their remains. We plead with our parents. Many are sick, and despite food being sent, nothing changes. People continue to die from hunger. We appreciate your help, but we are forced to eat human flesh due to starvation. Please send more assistance; there are many of us still underground,” the letter reads.

Meanwhile, between 23 December and today, 26 December at 11am, police arrested 26 illegal miners for trespassing, illegal mining, and violating the Immigration Act. Among them, four emerged at Margaret Shaft, and 22 at Buffelsfontein Shaft 10.

Police spokeswoman Colonel Adéle Myburgh confirmed the group includes nine from Lesotho, four Zimbabweans, nine Mozambicans, and four South Africans.

One suspect faces additional charge for possession of gold-bearing material, and another for explosives. All are set to appear in the Stilfontein Magistrates Court on Friday, 27 December 2024.
