A student at SJ van der Merwe Technical High School, Mphahlele has developed the Alerting Earpiece, a discreet personal safety device designed to protect potential victims in dangerous situations.

The earpiece looks like an ordinary piece of jewelry but is packed with advanced features: it can capture images via a hidden camera, share live GPS location, and send instant distress alerts to pre-selected contacts and emergency services — all with the press of a concealed button. This allows for rapid intervention and helps preserve evidence for investigations.

Mphahlele’s inspiration came from South Africa’s grim GBV statistics, with over 120,000 reported cases of violent crimes against women and children in a single year. Rather than accept this reality, she used technology as a tool for empowerment and protection, turning a personal safety idea into a potentially life-saving innovation.

Currently, the young inventor is seeking mentorship, funding, and partnerships to bring the Alerting Earpiece to market. Her goal is to make it accessible and affordable, particularly for high-risk communities.

In a country often overwhelmed by tragic statistics, Mphahlele’s invention is a symbol of resilience, empowerment, and youth-led change, proving that solutions can emerge from unexpected places — even a classroom in Limpopo.
