Sweet Springboks victory: Is SA finally getting that public holiday?

South Africans are celebrating the sweet victory of the Springboks at the Rugby World Cup, after beating New Zealand’s All Blacks in a nail-biting final. But amid the festivities, questions have been raised about the promise of a public holiday.

Earlier this week, President Cyril Ramaphosa promised the country a day off, should the national team win the World Cup for a second consecutive time.

On Saturday night, SA made history by scooping four RWC titles – the most any country has ever won. The Boks beat their fierce rugby rivals 11-12.

ARE SOUTH AFRICANS GETTING A PUBLIC HOLIDAY?

On social media, South Africans have been questioning if Sunday or Monday – or both – will be declared a public holiday. And now that the Springboks have fulfilled their end of the deal, will the President – who is in Paris – honour his end?

While Cyril has remained mum on his plans – for now – he has used his social media account to congratulate them.

In an official statement, the president lauded the Springboks’ historic win.

It read: “Tonight, Siya Kolisi and the 2023 World Cup champions have gifted us an extraordinary, and inspiring national achievement that lifts our hearts and hoists our Flag even higher.”

However, the statement stopped short of mentioning a public holiday.

Before jetting off to France on Friday, Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya revealed that the proposal of a public holiday – likely falling on Sunday – was still being considered by the president.

He said in a media briefing: “The president has received a lot of messages in this regard. South Africans from all walks of life have reached out to him. He said to me I must relay the fact that he’s considering the request.”
