Sixteen People Sentenced to Life Imprisonment After Mob Killing of Four Residents, Sixteen community members have been sentenced to life imprisonment following the brutal killing of four people in an incident of mob justice that has left an Eastern Cape village deeply divided and the nation shaken.

The Bhisho High Court handed down the sentences after finding the accused guilty of orchestrating and carrying out a violent attack that resulted in four deaths.
The tragic incident occurred on 31 December 2022 in Ndindwa Village, located in the Debenek area. According to evidence presented in court, a group of residents gathered for a community meeting where frustrations over crime in the area were discussed. During this meeting, the four victims were accused of stealing electricity cables and allegedly causing fear among community members. Instead of reporting the matter to authorities, the group resolved to take matters into their own hands.
Court records revealed that the four victims were forcibly removed from their homes later that day. They were severely assaulted, tied up, and dragged through the village to a central location. Witnesses testified that the victims were beaten repeatedly and showed visible signs of distress and injury. In a horrific act of violence, they were then set alight and burned while still alive.
One of the most disturbing details presented during the trial was the testimony that a nine-year-old child witnessed her mother being killed during the attack. The court noted that the presence of a child during such extreme violence added to the gravity of the crime and highlighted the long-lasting emotional trauma caused by the incident.
The four victims were identified as Vuyo Lamani (40), Lwando Makinana (30), Nwabisa Melani (29), and Ziphozihle Timba (37). Their deaths sent shockwaves through the surrounding communities and sparked widespread condemnation from civil society organisations and human rights groups.
Police from Chungwa SAPS responded to reports of the incident and arrived at the scene shortly after the attack. Officers immediately launched an investigation, securing the area and gathering witness statements. Due to the seriousness of the case, it was later transferred to the Bhisho High Court, where proceedings officially began on 11 March 2024.
After months of investigations, SAPS detectives arrested 16 suspects believed to have played active roles in the planning and execution of the attack. Prosecutors argued that the actions of the accused demonstrated a clear intention to kill and a complete disregard for the rule of law. The state also emphasised that the accused acted as a group, encouraging and reinforcing each other’s violent behaviour.
During sentencing, the court stressed that mob justice undermines the legal system and cannot be tolerated under any circumstances. The judge stated that communities facing crime must work with law enforcement rather than resort to violence, warning that vigilantism often leads to the loss of innocent lives and deepens social breakdown.
All 16 accused received identical sentences. Each was convicted on four counts of murder and sentenced to life imprisonment on each count. They were also sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment for each of the four counts of kidnapping, as well as three years for one count of public violence. In effect, each accused received four life sentences, amounting to a total of 64 life terms across the group.
