WATCH: Viola Davis and Thuso Mbedu drop ‘The Woman King’ Trailer. Oscar and Emmy Award-winning actress Viola Davis is ready to lead us into battle. The actress is a force to be reckoned with in the first official trailer for The Woman King.
Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and filmed in South Africa, The Woman King stars Davis as Nanisca, an African commander who led the Agojie, a real-life army of an all-female unit that aim to protect the African Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s with skills and a fierceness, unlike anything the world has ever seen.
Davis has previously shared that she trained four hours a day, five days a week, to prepare for the part physically. “Weight training, sprinting, martial arts, and weaponry training for the machete,” she said. “I like to say that I was the OG warrior.”
In the trailer, Davis, who plays Nanisca, tries to convince King Ghezo, played by John Boyega, that the Europeans will stop at nothing to conquer Africa. “War,” says a concerned King Ghezo. “You’re asking me to go to war.” “Some things are worth fighting for,” replies a steely-eyed Nanisca. From there, we see Davis’s Nanisca train a group of female warriors in the art of combat—preparing them for the battle to protect their kingdom.
With intense battle scenes and intricate action scenes between Viola Davis and Thuso Mbedu, The Woman King is unlike anything the two have taken on in their careers. The Woman King hits theatres exclusively on September 16th.
